Bombers sign McKernan to new AFL deal

Former first-round draft pick Elliott Kavanagh is looking for a new AFL club after he was let go by Essendon.

Kavanagh, the 19th overall pick at the 2011 draft, was one of two cuts made by the Bombers, who also decided not to offer Alex Browne a new contract.

Both midfielders struggled for opportunities at senior level this season, managing just five and three games respectively, despite the club's onfield struggles.

Browne, a third-round selection in 2010, endured a difficult run with injuries and spent all of the 2014 season on the sidelines after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

"Despite limited opportunities in the senior team, both (players) worked extremely hard to ensure they got the most out of their careers," list manager Adrian Dodoro told the club's website.

"Elliott and Alex showed tremendous resilience and determination to work their way back into senior selection this season, Elliott on his game while Alex overcame a serious knee injury."

Rookie Kurt Aylett and onballer Lauchlan Dalgleish were cut by the club in September, while Jake Carlisle, Jake Melksham and Jon Giles were traded, with Dustin Fletcher, Paul Chapman and Jason Winderlich all announcing their retirements at the end of the season.
