A dream debut could be in line for father son selection Jake Long in this weekend's Dreamtime at the 'G match against Richmond.

Long, the son of Essendon champion Michael, was taken with a rookie selection pick back in the 2014 rookie draft.

Speaking after Essendon's 46 point loss to the the Saints, coach John Worsfold said that Long was right in the frame to play against Richmond on Saturday night.

"He's been in the mix for the last month," Worsfold said post-match of Long, a 186cm and 75kg rookie.

"We rested him last week as part of his development, but the two weeks prior to that he was really in the mix.

"We'll get the reports on how he performed (in the VFL) and see what that says.

"Will Hams played really well. (Mark) Jamar's playing good footy, Shaun Edwards played really well, so all those guys are pushing up."

The Bombers are able to elevate a rookie to the senior list given the long term injuries to midfield duo Jonathan Simpkin and Jayden Laverde.
